Steve Skinner, Owner/President

Owner/President of Skinner-Smith Construction, Inc., Steve Skinner, has 34 years of experience with the company and was a laborer, operator, and partner prior to his current position.  Steve serves on the Authority Advisory Board of Cape Fear Public Utility and is a member of the Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association.

As an involved member of his community, Steve has volunteered as a coach for multiple sports through Burgaw Recreation Department for over 15 years.  He is also a former member of the Penderlea Fire Department.

Steve graduated from Pender Academy in 1976.  He’s been married for 40 years and has 2 children and 5 grandchildren. They are members of Burgaw Baptist Church.

 

Steven Skinner Jr., Owner / Director of Business Development

Steven began his career at Skinner Smith as a laborer. Over the years he advanced to a site supervisor and is now the owner / director of business development. Steven worked for over fifteen years in the utility construction industry.

Steven’s love of baseball led him to volunteer for ten years as a coach for the Burgaw Dixie Youth and travel baseball.

He and his wife, Anna have 3 children; Tyler, Lily, and Cooper and are members of the Burgaw Baptist Church.

 

Shawn Massing, Director of Production

After working with Skinner Smith Construction, Inc. for 20 years, Shawn now holds the title of Director of Production. With a strong skill set in running heavy machinery and installing underground utilities, Shawn has a passion for perfection. His goals for the next 20 years with Skinner Smith Construction, Inc. include helping grow the business even more, building stronger relationships with the community, and creating his own legacy.

Shawn was born and raised in Leavenworth, Kansas. After graduation, he moved to Carolton, Georgia, and began learning the construction business while working with a new construction company which focused on gas, power, and fiber optic utility work. The time spent with such an inexperienced company taught Shawn the importance of quality and precise work, time management, and the value of having a reputation for perfection.

Shawn moved to Wilmington and began working with Skinner Smith Construction, Inc. in 2001. Starting at the bottom, Shawn learned every part of the construction world including clearing land, laying pipe, grading, excavation, and most importantly building relationships with surrounding contractors and collaborating with other businesses. Through these experiences, Shawn has become a true professional. Shawn is currently licensed in Grading and Excavation.

Shawn has been married for 15 years, and they have 2 children. Having a family has motivated Shawn to grow and succeed in his career. Additionally, being a husband and father has taught Shawn the importance of listening, being patient, demonstrating loyalty and understanding, and never giving up on a dream. In his free time, Shawn enjoys golfing, fishing, and grilling. Shawn is also a huge football fan and has passed on his love for the Kansas City Chiefs to his kids.

 

Kevin King, Director of Estimation

Currently having more than 20 years of experience in the heavy equipment field, Kevin began as a ground laborer with Skinner Smith Construction, Inc. over 5 years ago. During his time with the company, Kevin progressed to equipment operator, then became field supervisor, and is now Director of Estimation. Kevin’s educational background includes an associate degree from James Sprunt Community College, Management and Organization Development through Mt Olive College, and the attainment of his North Carolina Grading and Excavation License.

Kevin has been active through community service and participation in a variety of ways. The support of his community involves 30-plus years with the Harrells Volunteer Fire Department, including being a former Assistant Chief. Additionally, Kevin was the past Master of Hiram Lodge No. 98, AF&AM in Clinton, NC, as well as 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Wilmington, NC. For 15 years, Kevin has impacted the youth of his community as a volunteer coach for the Recreation and Travel Ball Team.

Kevin and his wife, Renee, along with their three children: Jackson, Spencer, and Hailey, are members of Siloam Baptist Church.

Our History

In 1988, A.C. Skinner, the father of current owner/president, Steve Skinner; and Burrows Smith merged to form Skinner Smith Construction. The combined skills and experiences of both men came together to create an industry powerhouse.

Steve Skinner has worked alongside the Skinner Smith Construction team of knowledgeable and skilled utility service members for over 34 years. During this time, Steve has built a reputation for his attention to detail and his ability to grow a team of individuals who share his visions for achieving excellence in the workplace and for bettering the community through volunteering and service.
